Mount of the Holy Cross

This stereo is in good condition. Clean, and sharp. Byron H. Gurnsey was active 1872 to 1880. This location was very isolated at that time. The left image has a crack in the glass. I would suppose he felt, "I'm not going back."

The following was cribbed from SummitPost.Com web site. This mountain is 14005 feet high. One of the most famous of the Colorado 14ers, the Mount of the Holy Cross is famous for the east facing cross couloir, which fills with snow and forms a well defined cross. First discovered in 1869, it became the destination of Christian pilgrimages early in the last [20th] century - nearby Shrine Mountain was named that because it was a wayside near the road that approached the Holy Cross - since replaced by Interstate 70. Mount of the Holy Cross was once was a National Monument, but lost this status in the 50s - not sure if this was a church & state issue, but I've also read that erosion has made the cross less defined in the last hundred years. The mountain is only 14 miles from the Vail ski area, but is reclusive in that you need to get close to it to get a view - it's blocked on the south by Notch Mountain. There are two common routes to the top - Halfmoon Pass or Notch Mountain - both are class 2 - hiking and bouldering only. They can be combined into a loop for a very long day trek. There are other variations requiring some technical skills.
